The Speedmaster Professional is the most famous wristwatch by the Swiss Company Omega. This watch has a unique record: it was the first watch to pass the strict tests of NASA.
A reliable chronograph manually rechargeable produced in 1957 which had its highest moment of glory on July 16th, 1969, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore it during the Apollo11 space program, that lead them to land on the moon. A memorable moment in the history of mankind and in watchmaking, which was reached after a long series of difficult tests. In 1962, NASA decided to equip astronauts with a wrist chronograph extremely precise, reliable and durable, and for the occasion watches by different brands such as Elgin, Benrus, Hamilton, Mido, Piccard, Omega, Bulova, Rolex, Longines and Gruen were selected; only three passed the litmus test: Longines Wittnauer, Rolex Daytona and Omega Speedmaster. The results were the following: Daytona stationary during the test of humidity and high pressure; Wittnauer with crystal deformed during the pressure test of decompression; Speedmaster passed all tests and become part of the official equipment of the astronauts for the Gemini and Apollo projects. Un affidabile cronografo a carica manuale prodotto a partire dal 1957 che vede il suo momento di gloria più alto il 16 Luglio del 1969, quando Neil Armstrong e Buzz Aldrin lo indossano durante il programma spaziale Apollo 11, che li porta a sbarcare sulla luna.
Un momento memorabile per la storia dell’umanità e nel campo dell’orologeria, al quale si arriva dopo aver superato dei test molto difficili.
Nel 1962 la NASA decide di equipaggiare gli astronauti con un cronografo da polso estremamente preciso, affidabile e soprattutto resistente e furono selezionati per l’occasione orologi di marchi diversi come Elgin, Benrus, Hamilton, Mido, Piccard, Omega, Bulova, Rolex, Longines e Gruen; solo tre passarono alla prova decisiva: Longines Wittnauer, Rolex Daytona e Omega Speedmaster.
I risultati furono i seguenti:
Daytona fermo durante la prova di umidità e alta pressione;
Wittnauer con cristallo deformato durante la prova di pressione di decompressione;
Speedmaster supera tutti i test ed entra a far parte dell’equipaggiamento ufficiale degli astronauti per i progetti Apollo e Gemini.
Insomma, che siate astronauti, sognatori o semplicemente amanti degli orologi, l’Omega Speedmaster è un orologio da avere e custodire.
