Divenne di moda nel corso dell’Ottocento quando uno dei membri della famiglia
Chesterfield, stirpe nobile inglese, indossò questo elegante cappotto ad uno dei suoi eventi mondani;
la storia narra che fu proprio il Conte Chesterfield, da cui prende il nome, ad inventare e commissionare al suo sarto questo capospalla,
pensandolo in un filato di lana con collo applicato in velluto nero.
La versione più famosa è sicuramente quella monopetto, ma con il passare del tempo
venne proposto anche in doppio petto.
