La scarpa da barca
Le origini di questa particolare scarpa risalgono agli anni Trenta, quando Paul Sperry, imparò a sue spese quanto possa essere scivoloso un ponte di una barca
bagnato: aveva comprato uno schooner, un po’ mal ridotto e appena prese il largo il ponte di coperta si bagnò e divenne molto scivoloso e le sue scarpe sportive
non avevano presa.
Sperry non pensò subito a migliorare le scarpe, ma a modificare il ponte di coperta stendendo uno strato di polvere di smeriglio. La soluzione era funzionale,
ma non di certo molto piacevole visto che sembrava di camminare su della carta vetrata, come sosteneva lo stesso Sperry.
decise così di dedicarsi alla calzatura: fece centinaia e centinaia di esperimenti con molte tipologie di suole in gomma, ma nessuna aveva funzionava come
voleva.
Un bel giorno notò che Prince, il suo cocker, se la cavava benissimo sul fondo bagnato: questo grazie a delle piccole screpolature che il suo bel cane aveva sotto
le zampe.
Ispirandosi al suo cane dunque, pensò di ripetere questo motivo a “spina di pesce” sul fondo delle sue scarpe di gomma.
Aveva inventato le scarpe da barca e cercò di vendere subito l’idea, contattando l’azienda Converse, che decise di fornirgli i fondi in gomma e che poi avrebbe
completato la finitura della scarpa.
Un pubblicitario, suo amico, propose di venderle per corrispondenza a 4,50 dollari e Sperry decise di scrivere ai cento membri del prestigioso Cruising Club of
America, i quali risposero con entusiasmo e uno di loro gli ordinò addirittura scarpe per tutto il suo equipaggio.
Pensate che nel 1939, due anni prima dell’entrata in Guerra degli Stati Uniti, le scarpe da barca divennero parte dell’equipaggiamento della Marini Militare.
The Sperry Shoes
The origins of this particular shoe dates back to the Thirties, when Paul Sperry learned at his expenses how a wet deck of a boat can be slippery: he bought a
schooner, a little squashed and just as it took off , the deck became very wet and slippery and its sports shoes had no grip.
Sperry did not immediately thought to improve his shoes, but to change the deck by spreading a layer of grit. The solution was functional, but certainly not very
pleasant as it seemed to walk on the sandpaper, as claimed by the same Sperry.
Therefore, he decided to concentrate on the shoes: he made hundreds and hundreds of experiments with many types of rubber soles, but none worked as
wanted.
One day he noticed that Prince, his cocker dog, was doing very well on wet roads: this thanks to the small cracks that his beautiful dog had under his feet.
Inspired by his dog, therefore, he decided to repeat this “Herringbone” pattern at the bottom of his boots.
He invented the boat shoe and tried to sell the idea immediately, by contacting the Converse Company, that decided to provide him with funds in rubber and
then it would have completed the finishing of the shoe.
An advertiser, his friend, proposed him to sell them by mail order at $ 4.50 and Sperry decided to write to the one hundred members of the prestigious Cruising
Club of America, who responded with enthusiasm and one of them even ordered him shoes for the whole crew.
Simply think that in 1939, two years before the War in the United States, Sperry shoes became part of the equipment of the Marine Military Academy.
