Dear reader, if you consider a watch only a trivial accessory, this article is certainly not for you!
The history of watch making began a few hundred years ago and is full of people that, with their amazing inventions, have revolutionized the way of quantify the time and, the way of living time.
As simple fan, let me list some of the best known names in the industry, taking into account that this is only the tip of a large iceberg:
– Abraham-Louis Breguet : prominent inventor who in 1795 invented the Tourbillon mechanism which reduced the influence of gravity on the precision of the operation;
– Audemars Piguet famous for her luxury watches featuring the many functions such as seconds’ timer, display of various time zones, ringtones, calendar and moon phases. Since 1972 the flagship model is definitely the Royal Oak;
– Blancpain is the oldest watches’ Company in the world, founded in 1735. In 1991 it was created the most complicated watch in the world at that time;
– Baume & Mercier was founded in 1830 in Geneva and today it is famous for the elegant and ornamental watches;
– Breitling is a popular name in the aviation world and famous for technology featured in its most important models, the Navitimer able to measure not only the time and date, but also angle of ascent and descent and to calculate fuel consumption and speed average;
– Eberhard & Co.  is a company founded in 1887 known for its automatic chronographs, chosen by the officers of the Navy of the Kingdom of Italy. Reference model is the Chrono 4, recognizable by the four indicators arranged on the same line;
– International Watch & Co. or simply IWC is a company founded in 1868 in Schaffhausen, famous for Steed Scafusia, a mechanical watch with 21 functions;
– Hamilton founded in 1892, it is an American company renowned for the old mechanical models supplied to the US Army of the time;
– Jaeger LeCoultre a name that is immediately associated with a particular model, the Reverso, a watch with a case that can rotate180 degrees to protect the dial from impacts;
– Longines together with Breintling is the most appreciated aviator watch producer, which in collaboration with the pioneer Lindbergh designed a flying clock with hour angle;
– Cartier watch manufacturer since 1898 and famous for having marked the transition from the pocket watch to the wrist one. Models such as the Pasha and Panthere are certainly the most famous;
– Omega famous for Moon Watch, the famous model Speed Master Professional that in July 21st, 1969 was worn by astronaut Neil Armstrong during the landing on the moon;
– A. Lange & Sohne  German company founded in Glashutte in 1844 that earned great fame overcoming the difficulties caused by the Second World War. Characteristic of models A. Lange & Sohne is definitely the patented outsize date;
– Piaget founded in 1874 is a company that is among the first ones to be associated with extra-thin movements;
– Patek Philippe born in 1851 is for many the ultimate expression of current watches. Nautilus, Calatrava, Elipse and Gondolo are real icons of elegance;
– Rolex founded in 1905 is undoubtedly the best known brand of watches. Among the classics, there is the Oyster of 1926;
– TAG Heuer founded in 1865 and taken over in 1985 by TAG (Techniques d’Avantgarde) is a name that is immediately associated with the world of engines with two or four wheels;
– Vacheron Constantin was founded in 1775 in Geneva and is a manufactory that focuses its production on ultra-thin luxury watches;
– Zenith well known name of watch making with its El Primero chronograph, defined by many as an absolute technical masterpiece.

 

Caro lettore, se per lei l’orologio è solo un banale accessorio, questo articolo non fa certamente al caso suo.
La storia dell’orologeria ha inizio qualche centinaio di anni fa ed è ricca di persone che con le loro incredibili invenzioni hanno rivoluzionato il modo di leggere l’ora e specialmente il modo di vivere il tempo.
Da semplice appassionato, mi permetto di elencare alcuni tra i nomi più conosciuti di questo settore tenendo a precisare che questa non è che la punta di un grande icebearg :

  • Abraham-Louis Breguet inventore di spicco che nel 1795 inventò il Tourbillon un meccanismo che diminuiva l’influenza della forza di gravità sulla precisione del funzionamento;
  • Audemar Piguet famosa per i suoi orologi di lusso dalle innumerevoli funzioni come il contasecondi , l’indicazione dei vari fusi orari, suonerie, calendari e fasi lunari.
    Dal 1972 il modello di punta è sicuramente il Royal Oak;
  • Blancpain è l’azienda di orologi più antica del mondo, fondata pensate nel 1735. Nel 1991 creò quello che all’epoca era l’orologio più complicato al mondo;
  • Baume & Mercier  venne fondata nel 1830 a Ginevra ed oggi famoso per gli orologi eleganti e da ornamento;
  • Breitling nome popolare tra i piloti dell’aviazione e famoso per le tecnologie apportate al suo modello più importante, il Navitimer capace di misurare non solo ora e data , ma anche angolo di salita e di discesa e di calcolare il consumo di carburante e la velocità media;
  • Eberhard & Co è un’azienda del 1887 famosa per i suoi cronografi automatici, scelti dagli ufficiali della Marina Militare del Regno d’Italia. Di riferimento il modello Chrono 4 , riconoscibile dai quattro indicatori disposti sulla stessa linea;
  • International Watch & Co o più semplicemente IWC è un’azienda fondata nel 1868 a Sciaffusa , famosa per il Destriero Scafusia , un orologio meccanico con 21 funzioni;
  • Hamilton fondata nel 1892 , è un’azienda americana apprezzata per i vecchi modelli meccanici dati in dotazione all’esercito americano dell’epoca;
  • Jaeger LeCoultre un nome che viene subito associato ad un particolare modello, il Reverso, un orologio dalla cassa capace di girare di 180°  per proteggere il quadrante dagli urti;
  • Longines è assieme a Breintling l’orologio da aviatore più apprezzato, che in collaborazione col pioniere Lindbergh progettò un orologio da volo con angolo orario;
  • Cartier è produttore di orologi dal 1898 ed è famosa per aver segnato il passaggio dall’orologio da taschino a quello da polso. Modelli come il Pasha e il Panthere sono di certo i più famosi;
  • Omega famosa per il Moon Watch, il famoso modello Speed Master Professional che nel 21 Luglio 1969 veniva indossato dall’astronauta Neil Armstrong durante lo sbarco sulla luna;
  • A. Lange & Sohne azienda tedesca fondata a Glashutte nel 1844 che si guadagnò grande fama superando le difficoltà dovute alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Caratteristico dei modelli A. Lange & Sohne è sicuramente il grande datario brevettato;
  • Piaget fondata nel 1874 è un’azienda che figura tra le prime ad essere associata ai movimenti extra-piatti;
  • Patek Philippe nata nel 1851è per molti la massima espressione di orologeria esistente.
    Nautilus, Calatrava, Elipse e Gondolo sono delle vere icone di eleganza;
  • Rolex fondata nel 1905, è senza dubbio la marca di orologi più conosciuta. Tra gli intramontabili classici, troviamo l’Oyster del 1926;
  • TAG Heuer fondata nel 1865 e rilevata nel 1985 da TAG ( Techniques d’Avantgarde ) è un nome che viene associato subito al mondo dei motori a due o quattro ruote;
  • Vacheron Constantin nasce nel 1775 a Ginevra ed è una manifattura che focalizza la sua produzione su orologi di lusso ultra-piatti;
  • Zenith celebre nome dell’orologeria grazie al suo cronografo El Primero , definito da molti un assoluto capolavoro della tecnica.
