I do not want to talk about its history, its origins and it does not matter who invented it, the Tuxedo for us men is the elegant suit par excellence, indispensable in our closet. It has more than a century of history – of which I have spoken several times – and that despite the trends, some quite bizarre, it maintains its classic status that made it so important. Every time I talk about it I want to stress that it cannot be worn in all occasions, but only when the invitation requires it and, above all, it should not be used at ceremonies.
One of the questions I am asked most often in this period is: how should be done the perfect tux? The perfect tuxedo is made of lightweight black wool, one or double-breasted jacket, wide lapels or shawl, black pants strictly without brim, with or without satin side-band. For an evening out it is very chic to wear a mismatched white jacket with black pants. What should you wear with a tuxedo? White pique shirt with double cuffs for cufflinks, sash at the waist, black bowtie and oxford leather shoes or black brushed calfskin always worn with long socks up to the knee, of course, black. For the dandies also a velvet or painted loafer shoe. That said, it should be considered that the dress-code no longer has the same importance as in the past and new fashion trends have given way to more bright colors and patterns that stand out even kilometers away. I do not remember ever seeing the good old James Bond wearing patterned tuxedos with gold ornamentation. Tastes are certainly tastes, but always trust the good sense. Non voglio parlare della sua storia, ne delle sue origini e poco importa chi lo ha inventato, lo Smoking ( o Tuxedo ) per noi uomini è l’abito elegante per eccellenza, indispensabile nel nostro guardaroba.
E’ un capo con più di un secolo di storia – di cui ho parlato più volte – e che nonostante le mode, alcune alquanto bizzarre, riesce a conservare quella classicità che tanto lo ha reso importante.
Ogni volta che ne parlo ci tengo a ricordare che non si indossa in tutte le occasioni , ma solo quando l’invito lo richiede e soprattutto non si usa in ambito cerimonia.
Una domanda che mi viene posta spesso è: come dovrebbe essere fatto lo smoking ideale?
Lo Smoking perfetto è fatto di lana leggera color nero, giacca ad uno o doppio petto, revers largo o a scialle, pantalone nero rigorosamente senza risvolto con o senza banda in raso laterale. Per una serata all’aperto è molto chic indossare una giacca bianca spezzata al pantalone nero.
E cosa si indossa con lo smoking?
Camicia bianca in piquè con polsini doppi per i gemelli, fusciacca in vita, bowtie nero da allacciare e oxford in vernice o vitello spazzolato nero da indossare sempre con calze lunghe fino al ginocchio, ovviamente nere. Per i più dandy anche una loafer in velluto o in vernice.
Detto ciò, va considerato che il dress-code non ha più lo stesso peso che aveva in passato e con l’influenza della moda, sono subentrati colori più sgargianti e fantasie che si fanno notare anche a chilometri di distanza.
Non ricordo di aver mai visto il buon vecchio James Bond indossare smoking a fantasia o con decori dorati. I gusti son gusti certo, ma confido sempre nel buon senso.
